Celebrating cancer patients and survivors
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual celebration of life that’s held nationwide on the first Sunday in June. The physicians and staff at Southeastern Medical Oncology Center want to honor those who have survived, and to recognize how their strength shows the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be fruitful, rewarding and inspiring. This day provides an opportunity for the 14.5 million individuals and families living with a history of cancer to connect with one another, celebrate milestones, and acknowledge the support they have received along the way.
Tips to commemorate the strength of cancer patients and survivors
We understand that every cancer patient is different, and you should celebrate in a way that’s meaningful to you. Reflecting on both the positive and challenging changes in your life can help you sort through complex emotions and share your experiences in a healthy way.
Make time to process
Take some time out of your day to contemplate and process your cancer journey through journaling or meditation. Find a quiet place that calms you, like the beach or a peaceful place in your favorite park.
Plan or attend a special event
A special occasion is a great way to honor Cancer Survivors Day. Take a trip or plan a function with family and friends. There are also many events that are put on by cancer organizations or patient advocacy groups, like annual walks, 5Ks or marathons.
Volunteer or donate
Many cancer survivors notice that giving back with their time, money or skills helps to give concrete meaning to their journey. Volunteering for or donating to a cancer support organization, caring for loved ones living with cancer, or becoming a patient advocate is a great way to share your firsthand experience and give back.
Do something you enjoy and celebrate your way
One of the most important things to keep in mind is to do is something you truly enjoy. This special day has everything to do with the survivor and what makes them appreciate life. Whether it’s taking a hike, getting a massage, or seeing a movie with friends, celebrate your victory against cancer in the way you want.
